Scaling Success

How Salt Bank captured 4% market share in 12 months.

Following its April 2024 launch, Salt Bank entered 2025 with clear objectives. The team identified two strategic pillars that would drive success and differentiation in Romania's competitive banking landscape: a compelling value proposition and a distinctive brand and go-to-market approach. These pillars, enabled by the flexibility of Engine's platform, proved instrumental in Salt's remarkable first full year of operation.

Building trust, expanding value

Salt's vision of customer-centric, mobile-first banking required continuous innovation. Throughout 2025, the bank rapidly expanded its product suite, leveraging Engine's agile platform to deliver features that resonated with Romanian customers' evolving needs. The introduction of cashback promotions and cross-border payments addressed practical customer demands, while unsecured lending and in-app bill payments brought additional convenience and value. Freelancer accounts acknowledged the growing gig economy, providing tailored solutions for Romania's independent workforce. The call monitor feature added an extra layer of security and peace of mind.

Perhaps most notably, Salt launched Help Mama, an industry-first elderly fraud prevention programme. This innovative feature allows users to assign a trusted "protector" who must approve high-value transactions, shielding vulnerable loved ones from scams while maintaining their financial privacy and autonomy. Help Mama exemplifies Salt's commitment to trust-building, strengthening the bank's brand in the process.

Making an impact in the industry

Salt's go-to-market strategy centered on its bold promise: a better, smarter way to bank that truly disrupts the Romanian market by putting customers first. Within its first full year of operation, Salt attracted 500,000 customers and captured 4% of Romania's retail banking market, propelling it into the top 10 banks in the country. The bank's achievements earned industry recognition, including awards for 'Best Retail Bank' and 'Best Use of Tech in Retail Banking'– two of more than 40 awards won throughout 2025.

In 2026, Salt has not slowed down, in March they launched diaspora accounts designed for Romanians living abroad who want to maintain a link with home. Whether they reside in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Ireland or Portugal, customers can have the opportunity to open a main Salt Bank account in Euros, and a secondary account in Romanian Lei, to make paying bills or transferring money back home seamless.

Leveraging platform flexibility

Salt's rapid innovation and market success underscore a critical advantage: Engine's cloud-native core banking platform. Unlike legacy systems that constrain product development and time-to-market, Engine enabled Salt to continuously evolve its offering, responding swiftly to customer needs and market opportunities.

From launch to market leader in just over a year, Salt’s successful strategic vision is enabled by the flexibility of their platform. As Salt continues to innovate and grow, its partnership with Engine remains foundational to its ability to deliver exceptional customer experiences and maintain its competitive edge in Romania's digital banking revolution.
