Firstly, tell us a little bit about you and how you got into Consulting and became a Product Consultant

I started consulting through a graduate scheme in Sydney, progressing through to Manager before relocating to London. My project experience includes customer and operational transformation in financial services with elements of technology delivery scattered throughout. I was fortunate enough to do some consulting work with Engine in my previous role, and was captivated by the Engine story, growth potential and people. After 6.5 years in consulting, I thought that jumping to a Product Consultant role at Engine is a great next step.

What does a typical day look like as a Product Consultant at Engine?

My role has changed in my short career to date at Engine. The first few months as a Product Consultant was all about immersing myself in the Engine platform and mobile app, which then rolled into presenting introductory demos to prospective clients. There was a week where in the space of two days, I presented to clients in the Middle East, Europe and North America.

Now, I’m in more of a delivery-focussed role with our Australian client, AMP. In this role, I’m looking after a couple of functional areas from the UK perspective (i.e. customer services, onboarding, open banking), so I spend a lot of time working with the team on ground in Sydney, going through requirements on various deliverables, and then working with our engineers in the UK to deliver the product. It’s really dynamic with broad coverage across the Engine platform, giving me plenty of opportunity to learn and grow into the role.

Tell us the most exciting thing about being a Product Consultant at Engine?

A few things come to mind here. Variety of work; responsibility across areas of the platform / client; and most importantly, the people. The final point is the most important. My colleagues are talented at what they do, but ultimately good, down-to-earth individuals who are all focused on creating and sharing the best-in-class digital banking platform we’ve built. It’s a fantastic work environment that brings the best out of everyone.

What would you like to tell anyone looking to join Engine as a Product Consultant?

Curiosity is key: I think you need to be comfortable asking questions and have the want to upskill across the Engine platform

Expectation to own deliverables and drive outcomes: you are given a fair amount of responsibility early in the role. Being comfortable with this is and working independently is important

You’ll be working with a seriously talented group of people from a variety of backgrounds and career paths

What is the one piece of advice / guidance you’d have given yourself on your first day in Consultancy?

Say yes to all opportunities, especially early in your career. A great aspect of consulting is taking what you learn on a specific project, client or sector and applying it elsewhere. By being open to new opportunities that may not necessarily align with your skillset or exactly what you want, you end up with a great breadth of experience to take forward.
